Online Vocal Pitch Changer

A vocal pitch changer moves a recording up or down in pitch while the tempo stays the same, so you can hear your singing in another key without recording it again. Record a take with your microphone or open an audio file, choose any shift between 12 semitones down and 12 up, check it against the original and save it as MP3 or WAV. Everything runs in your browser.

Formant correction On holds the resonances that colour your vowels close to where they were, so a shifted voice sounds less like a cartoon. Off lets them move with the pitch, like tape sped up or slowed down.
File format

MP3 is small and plays anywhere. WAV is uncompressed: better if you will edit or mix the take.

Shift Your Singing in Five Steps

  1. Press Record yourself and allow the microphone, or press Open an audio file (MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG or FLAC). You can also drop a file onto the tool. A recording stops by itself at 6 minutes.
  2. Pick a preset (Octave down, Whole step down, Whole step up, Octave up, Chipmunk or Giant) or set the semitones with −1 and +1, or type a number. The readout names the interval and shows what a sung C4 turns into, for example D4 at +2.
  3. Press Play. Switch Listen to between Original and Shifted to compare the same moment. Click or tap the waveform to jump, or focus it and use the arrow keys to move 5 seconds.
  4. Open More options for fine tuning (−50 to +50 cents), formant correction on or off, and whether to save MP3 (192 kbps) or 16-bit WAV.
  5. Press Download. The saved name includes the shift, such as my-take_-2st.mp3. A long take needs a few seconds to prepare, and the download starts by itself when it is ready. If nothing happens, use the Save link under the button.

The format starts on MP3 for recordings and compressed files and on WAV for WAV or FLAC files, so a lossless source stays lossless unless you choose otherwise.

How Many Semitones Should You Shift?

One semitone is the step from one piano key to the next, black keys included. Twelve semitones make an octave. The table shows common shifts and what happens to a C4 you sing, using the same names as the readout in the tool.

ShiftIntervalA sung C4 becomesWhen singers use it
+1 / −1half stepC♯4 / B3A song sits only slightly out of reach
+2 / −2whole stepD4 / B♭3The most common small key change
+3 / −3minor thirdE♭4 / A3The highest or lowest notes are clearly a strain
+5 / −5perfect fourthF4 / G3A larger move; the processing becomes easier to hear
+7 / −7perfect fifthG4 / F3A big move; check the result carefully
+12 / −12octaveC5 / C3The same melody one octave higher or lower

To choose the shift, compare the highest and lowest notes of the song with your own range. If you do not know your range yet, start with how to find your vocal range. What matters most is where the melody spends its time, your tessitura, not only the single top note. Start with the smallest shift that makes the song comfortable, then listen. If a note name is unclear, the guide to vocal range notes explains how C3, C4 and C5 relate.

What Singers Use It For

  • Try a song in your key before you learn it. Shift an instrumental or backing track down or up until the melody sits well for you. Choosing songs that fit your voice covers the other half of the job.
  • Hear your own take lower or higher. Record a phrase, then play it back two semitones down or up to hear how the song might feel in that key. It is a preview: you still have to sing the new key yourself.
  • Practise with a shifted voice memo. A teacher records an exercise in their key, and you shift it into yours. The same works for any of the vocal warm-ups for beginners that you have as a recording.
  • Learn a part written for another voice. An octave shift moves a melody to where a singer of the other voice type would sing it. The male vocal range chart and the female vocal range chart show why many melodies sit about an octave apart for men and women.
  • Match a track that is slightly off standard tuning. Older recordings and some live takes sit a few cents away from A4 = 440 Hz. Fine tuning moves them by up to 50 cents so a piano, tuner or pitch app agrees with the track.

To shift only the voice or only the backing of a finished song, separate them first: see how to isolate vocals from a song. A shifted copy of the melody is a parallel line, not a harmony part. Real harmonies change interval from note to note to stay in the key.

Formant Correction Explained

Formants are the resonances of your throat and mouth that shape vowels and give a voice its character. When you raise the pitch of a recording on its own, the formants rise with it, and the voice starts to sound small and cartoon-like. Lower it and the formants drop, and it sounds oversized and dull.

With formant correction on (the default), the tool estimates the resonance pattern of each moment and pulls it back towards where it was, so a shifted voice keeps more of its own tone. It reduces the effect but does not remove it, and the correction is limited, so a shift of an octave still sounds processed. A real singer who moves up an octave also changes the way they sing, for example between chest voice and head voice, which no pitch shift reproduces. Switch correction off, or use the Chipmunk and Giant presets, to hear the formants move with the pitch.

Limits and Sound Quality

  • Bigger shifts sound more processed. Shifts of one to three semitones usually sound the most natural. From about five semitones up or down, expect a thinner, phasey or metallic edge, most of all on held notes and breathy sounds.
  • Made for one voice. A backing track or a full song shifts too, but drums, reverb and dense mixes can smear. Listen before you rely on it.
  • The source sets the ceiling. Room echo, background noise and low-quality files are shifted along with the voice. A quiet room and a mic about a hand’s width from your mouth give the cleanest take. The tool records the raw microphone signal, with the browser’s noise suppression, echo cancellation and automatic gain turned off.
  • Not studio software. Files are saved as MP3 at 192 kbps or 16-bit WAV at the sample rate of the source, up to 48 kHz. There is no multitrack editing, trimming or effects.
  • Length and size. Takes and files can be up to 6 minutes and 100 MB. The whole recording is held in the phone or computer’s memory, so on an older phone a long stereo file can still be too much. If the page reloads, try a shorter clip.
  • Formats depend on the browser. MP3 and WAV open in all current browsers, and M4A and FLAC in most; OGG and some other formats may not open in older Safari. Recording needs a secure (https) page, microphone permission and a browser that can record audio.
  • Silent on an iPhone? Turn the volume up and check the silent switch, then press Play again.

Your Recording Stays on Your Device

Recording, decoding, shifting and saving all happen in your browser. The page loads the audio engine and, when you save an MP3, the encoder from this site, but the tool does not send your audio anywhere and does not store it. When you close or reload the page, the recording is gone unless you downloaded it. See the privacy policy for the site as a whole.

Vocal Pitch Changer FAQ

Does changing the pitch change the speed?

No. The shifted file has the same tempo and the same length as the original. Only the Chipmunk and Giant presets imitate the tone of sped-up or slowed-down tape, and even they keep the tempo.

How many semitones is one key?

Moving a song up or down by one key usually means one semitone, a half step. Two semitones make a whole step, and twelve make an octave.

Can I change the key of a song to suit my voice?

Yes. Open the song or its backing track, shift it down or up until the melody feels comfortable to sing, and save it. For singing along, a backing track without the original vocal works best.

Is this the same as Auto-Tune?

No. Auto-Tune and other pitch correction pull individual notes into tune. This tool moves the whole recording by the amount you choose and leaves the tuning of each note as it was.

What makes a shifted take sound thin or robotic?

Large shifts, noisy recordings and reverb all make the processing easier to hear. Try a smaller shift, record nearer the mic somewhere quieter, and compare formant correction on and off.

Which files can I open and save?

You can open MP3, WAV, M4A, OGG and FLAC files, and the sound of MP4 or MOV videos, if your browser can decode them. You can save the result as MP3 or WAV.

Does my audio leave my device?

No. Capture, shifting and saving happen inside your browser, and the tool neither uploads nor keeps your audio. Close the page and it is gone, unless you downloaded the result.
